2nd Grade Tape-Resist Tree Landscapes

Second graders looked at examples of New England and Hudson River School paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries to discuss foreground, middleground, and background.  Using masking tape, students planted trees on their paper, then used watercolor to put in sky and earth, creating a horizon line.  After removing the tape, students used colored pencils to ground their trees with roots, detail the textures of the trunk, and add some woodland details.

3rd Grade String Paintings

Third graders are studying spiders, webs, and the many folktales around these, so for their first art project, they used lengths of string dipped in single colors to create paintings inspired by 1950s action painters such as Jackson Pollack, Lee Krasner, Grace Hartigan, Franz Kline, and Joan Mitchell. Come check them out in the upstairs hallway; it's exciting to see how different each composition came out!

Quetzelcoatl

This week, the fourth graders heard the legend of Quetzelcoatl, a god of Aztec and Mayan lore in connection with our Global Education Theme, Ecuador.  We discussed this deity's possible forms, described similarly in several South American folktales.  One student aptly mused, "Is it a winged serpent, or a scaled bird?" Fourth graders then drew their interpretations of Quetzelcoatl in preparation for making papier mache sculptures next week - so many great imaginings!  Keep your eye out here for their progress!
