8th grade HW due Monday 11/25
Your Homework will be to write down a
dream (1page total) and include vivid description. Elements from this
dream will be included in your next art piece. If you do not dream,
you may make up a convincing dream in place of a real dream for the
homework assignment. The point is to have some dream-like elements to
work with. If you would choose a dream that does not have blood and
guts we would all be happier.
7th and 8th grade HW due Wed 11/13
Line drawings of your GET calendar images (7th: galapagos tortoises, 8th: Shuar sacred objects and patterns), pencil on white paper.
8th grade HW due Monday 11/4
Research paper-cut book art and write down or email me with artists' names and pieces, or links to their work. Come to class with 3 sketches along with how you will implement these ideas, and choose one that you are most inclined to use.
7th grade HW due Tuesday 11/5
Pick an item of clothing to bring in
that you will use as a subject of an art piece. This should be
something that says something about you. A favorite piece of clothing
can be something old and
well worn or shiny and fancy. You may
want to keep it in a plastic bag if it is important to you. It may
not be a shoe. Pick something that is bigger than your open hand.
I would like you to do three sketches
of your item of clothing. If you draw it once and decide you would
like a different item that is fine. Your drawings may be of different
clothing items.
7th grade HW due Thursday 10/17
If you have already done so in class, please finish your complementary colors chart and return any colored pencils you may have borrowed.
7th grade HW
Due Tuesday 9/24 for class:
Find three greens and three browns for the ferns, grass, and tree trunk/branches in the mural, using your choice of drawing material (colored pencil, marker, watercolor, etc), making a small swatch of each color (6 total colors) on one piece of paper.
7th grade HW
Due Monday 9/16:
Completed full-color design and final proposal for mural (criteria below)
Homework for 7th and 8th
Due Wednesday 9/11 for 8th grade:
Completed full-color design and final proposal for mural (criteria below)Due Thursday 9/12 for 7th grade:
Complete sketch (ok if still in pencil only) and proposal for mural (criteria below)
Proposal: 3-5 sentences explaining...
1.) Purpose (Why this design?)
2.) Connection (to the TGS community and/or wider community)
3.) Benefit
Homework for 7th and 8th grades:
Due Monday for 8th (9/9) and Tuesday for 7th (9/10)
Look at examples of murals/graffiti/public art and note elements that are interesting to you and/or that you might like to integrate into your own designs. Some starting points: blu, Philadelphia Mural Project, public art in Quito, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Maxine Albro. I also have books and flyers in the art room of the exhibit Orozco at Dartmouth last year.
Please bring me 2 sentences about your findings and 2 images you found interesting.
You may hand-write or email me at hannah@thegrammarschool.org
Due next class:
3 sketches of your ideas, using the template as a guide, but not drawing on it yet.
7th Grade Homework
Assigned May 14th
Due May 20th
I would like a completed sketch of your CD front and back
covers. This means with songs and
band name. You may not use the
computer on Monday until this is done.
Remember too that you need to have 3 images brought in digital form. Good luck!
Yours,
William
8 Grade Homework
Due: 6/ 4
Asssigned: 5/14
Your final grade project will be your art retrospective
display in the gallery. It needs
to have art from four different years, show your best work, and be well
presented. Many students came to
TGS later in life and others may have art that they made in other venues. Art from other places that you are
proud of is fair game. I would
like you to have this art at school and ready to start hanging by Tuesday June
4th. Students that have been at TGS for many years will have a piece
of art from each year in their school portfolio. This is usually plenty of art to choose from.
Yours,
William

I would like you to
come up with a concept for a made up band and album with you as a member/ or
star. You need a band name, album
title, artists name (could be yours) and at least 8 song titles. It would be helpful to pin-point the
type of music you “play.” Your
next class assignment will be to create an album cover (front and back) for
your made up band. I will give you
more guidelines next week.
You may certainly look
at favorite bands for inspiration and talk to friends and family to get ideas.
Have fun!

I would like you to look at the work of Li Hongbo. There is a video on the Design Boom
site that shows people moving the sculptures. I would like your written response to these. Describe them. What does it remind you of? What is it
about? Why would someone make
these? Do human forms make a
difference or would a car be just as cool? A half a page would suffice.

The
artist Liu Bolin will be exhibited in Brattleboro this spring. He is one of a number of important
Chinese artists that is making ground breaking work today. I still cannot believe his work will be
here. I would like you to read
about him and look at images of his work.
I would like a 1/2 page written response to his photographs. What do you feel? What do you see? What is it about? You should also include a description
of one of the works that you found most striking.
A
Google search for his images will give you plenty to choose from.
8th Grade Art Homework
Due: Feb 26
Assigned: Feb 25
We will be constructing cardboard and paper shoe sculptures for our next art project. I am hoping that you will find a shoe/boot that you are excited about making. This is either because you own it and love it or because you have a picture and wish you had it. Or maybe just think it is awesome.
Yours homework is to bring a real shoe or a photo of a shoe to serve as a reference.
Due: Mar 5
I would like you to do two drawings of your chosen shoe and put in lots of detail. You should spend at least 45 minutes on this homework.

I
would like you to look at the pig tattoo work of Belgian artist Wim
Delvoye. An image search should
give you several to look at. I
would like you to think about this art work. Is it wrong or great?
How can he make this work and be a vegetarian? Is eating bacon better or worse than making this art? Why is it illegal in Europe to make
this work? I would like you to
answer these questions and also say why you think what you do?
You
may also do a detailed drawing of one of the tattooed pigs instead of answering
the questions – but you must come to class prepaired to discuss the work. (30 min + drawing).
Wim
Delvoye (born
1965 in Wervik, West Flanders) is a
Belgian neo-conceptual artist known for his inventive and often shocking
projects. Much of his work is focused on the body. He repeatedly links the
attractive with the repulsive, creating work that holds within it inherent
contradictions- one does not know whether to stare, be seduced, or to look
away.
“Art
Farm”
Though
Delvoye started tattooing pig skins taken from slaughterhouses in the United
States in 1992, he began to tattoo live pigs in 1997. Delvoye was interested in
the idea that “the pig would literally grow in value," [7] both in a physical and economic
sense. He ultimately moved the operation to an Art Farm in China in 2004 where
restrictions regarding animal welfare were less strict. The pigs have been
inked with a diverse array of designs, including the trival, such as skulls and
crosses, to Louis Vuitton designs, to designs dictated by the pig's anatomy.
The designs are created by Delvoye and his three colleagues in residence."[8] In an interview with ArtAsiaPacific's Paul Laster, Delvoye described
the process of tattooing a live pig,"we sedate it, shave it and apply
Vaseline to its skin.""[9] As another manifestation of contradiction in Delvoye’s
art, he owns a pig farm though he is a practicing vegetarian.
