Large Expressive Self Portraits
Seventh graders are nearly done with their large acrylic self-portraits. We looked at the work of Chuck Close and used a grid technique to enlarge photographs. Students chose expressive colors but with the same value as the original photograph. It is a little weird to walk into a room where everyone is 3x their normal size.
7th and 8th Grade Art Electives Have Been Chosen
Seventh and eighth graders have narrowed down their winter art electives to four classes. We started with a list of about 40 ideas and voted to whittle them down. The four classes will be Filmmaking, Black and White Photography, Graffiti Art, and Digital Color Photography. I am working on hiring the instructors. This is the third year of art electives and the first fully funded by The Grammar School. The classes will be on six consecutive Fridays starting January 6th. Students are quite excited.

Tanzanian Painting Exhibit At TGS
As part of a school wide study of the Maasai culture, The Grammar School will host a month long exhibit of Tanzanian paintings. Painted with brightly colored enamel bicycle paint on masonite in the Tinga Tinga style, these vibrant contemporary works depict scenes such as local folktales and large East African animals that are popular with the tourists on safari who buy many of the paintings. Tinga Tinga is a school of art that was founded by Edward Saidi Tingatinga in the 1960s and has gained followers and popularity throughout the world.
This year’s Global Education Theme at The Grammar School will focus on the arts, crafts, history, and culture of the Maasai people. It also will celebrate the experience of a Maasai student who has studied at The Grammar School for the past five years, and who will return to Tanzania for secondary school after graduating from TGS in June.
The paintings will be on display in the Dorothy Richardson Galley from October 18th to November 15th, and may be viewed during school hours by checking in at the main office.

Art Signs Show Off Art Works on Campus
Thanks to the generosity of The Clowes Foundation, we now have the beginning of an outdoor sculpture tour. Five spots have student artwork and metal signs for each. The signs talk about the visiting artist and describe the process students used to make the work of art. I hope you will go on a tour and see all five.

A Great Time to Take Kids to see NYC Galleries
There are three fabulous shows up in Chelsea that your kids will love. These will be up until mid October and are all in easy walking distance of each other. New York is beautiful in the fall, if you can find a spare weekend. I hope you will check them out. Nick Cave's dancing people in costumes covered in toys is worth the trip in itself (at Mary Boone). Down the street is Richard Serra's maze of beautifully rusted steel (Gagosian) and Do Ho Suh has a huge dollhouse like model of his own apartment building. It is complete with dirty dishes, a teenager's heavily postered room, and a huge crash on one side (LehmannMaupin).
Also of note are our own local art stars Eric Aho (DC Moore) and Ethan Murrow (Winston Wachter) . Both are great shows and very child friendly.

K-1 and 4 Visit The Brattleboro Museum and Art Center
On September 19th the kindergarten and first grade will go to The Brattleboro Museum for the morning. They will look at several exhibits and do an art project on shapes. On the same day in the afternoon the fourth grade will visit the museum and do a sewing project involving leaf shapes. The show is fantastic right now and is worth a visit.
